Cancel an Adobe Business Agreement Before Notarization
This guide instructs organizations using Adobe Acrobat Sign integrated with Proof on how to cancel an agreement in "In progress" status before notarization by selecting the agreement in the Manage portal and choosing Cancel, emphasizing the importance of confirming details, notifying signers, and creating new agreements if needed, while noting that cancellation is unavailable once notarization begins or the agreement is completed.
Audience: Organizations
Here's how to cancel an Adobe Acrobat Sign agreement before the signer completes notarization through Proof. This applies to organizations using the Adobe Acrobat Sign integration with Proof.
Important: Only agreements in an In progress status can be canceled before notarization. Once an agreement progresses beyond this stage, cancellation options may no longer be available in Adobe.
When to Cancel an Agreement
You may need to cancel an agreement if:
- The transaction was created in error
- The signer information is incorrect
- The documents need to be updated
- The signer should no longer proceed with the notarization
Cancel an Agreement
- 1.Log in to your Adobe Acrobat Sign portal.
- 2.Select Manage from the options near the top of the page.
- 3.Check the box next to the In progress agreement you want to cancel.
- 4.Select Cancel under Actions on the right side of the page.
- 5.Review the confirmation message, then confirm the cancellation.
Important: Canceling the agreement prevents the signer from continuing with that Adobe agreement. If the documents still need to be completed, create and send a new agreement with the correct information.
Best Practices
- Confirm you're canceling the correct agreement before proceeding.
- Review signer and document details before creating a replacement agreement.
- Notify the signer if they already received an invitation for the canceled agreement.
- Cancel before the signer enters or completes the notarization workflow.
Troubleshooting
- If you don't see the Cancel action, confirm the agreement is still in In progress status.
- If the agreement has already been completed or canceled, it cannot be canceled again.
- If the signer still needs to complete the documents, create a new Adobe agreement and resend it.
- If you're unsure whether the signer completed notarization, check the agreement status in Adobe and the related transaction status in Proof.
Summary Checklist
- Cancellation only works for agreements in In progress status.
- Adobe Acrobat Sign portal → Manage → check the agreement → Cancel → confirm.
- Notify the signer if they already received an invitation, and create a new agreement if the documents still need to be completed.

The Green Checkmark That Changed Everything
Proof has developed Proof Digital Certificates, a cryptographically secured notary credential system that, as the first platform on Adobe's Approved Trust List, enables online notarized documents to display a green checkmark verifying authenticity, ensures tamper-evidence through digital seals, and protects notary certificates with enterprise-grade hardware security modules to maintain trust and prevent fraud in digital notarizations.
Adobe Platform Seal – Proof Help Center
The Adobe Platform Seal feature in Proof uses Adobe Approved Trust List (AATL) certificates to tamper-seal eSigned documents, displaying a green checkmark in Adobe for certified single-party signed documents (excluding multi-party and notarized ones), and can be enabled by contacting Proof’s Customer Success Manager or Support team.
Digital Certificates Now Available
In March 2026, Proof introduced exclusive, rigorously audited digital certificates for notaries that meet WebTrust standards and are listed on Adobe's Authorized Trust List, providing a secure digital identity that digitally signs and stamps notarized documents with a visible green checkmark in Adobe Acrobat, preventing seal replication, enhancing trust, and ensuring remote online notarizations are more secure and traceable than traditional paper-based methods.
Audit Trails Overview
Proof generates two audit trails for every completed transaction: a transaction-level audit trail providing a high-level summary of key signing events (such as signer details, ID verification, and seal application) reflecting only the most recent transaction, and a more detailed, tamper-sealed document-level audit trail embedded within the document itself that records all actions on the document and is viewable in Adobe Acrobat, with both accessible to anyone who has access to the document.
Why RON is Critical to Stopping Deed Fraud
The article explains that rising deed fraud in the U.S. threatens homeowners' valuable assets, and highlights how remote online notarization (RON) combats this by employing rigorous multi-step digital identity verification—including knowledge-based authentication, extensive credential analysis with over 25 checks, and manual notary review—thereby creating a more trustworthy record than traditional in-person notarizations and helping to prevent fraudulent property transfers.
