Create an Identify Transaction – Proof Help Center
An Identify transaction in Proof allows you to verify an individual's identity without requiring a signature, using methods like credential analysis, IAL2-compliant verification with fraud agent backup, or knowledge-based authentication, and can be created via API or EasyLink by configuring transaction details, adding recipient info, and optionally notifying colleagues, with each transaction verifying one person at a time and resulting in a detailed identity report for fraud prevention in sensitive processes.
The short answer: An Identify transaction lets you verify someone's identity without requiring them to sign a document — useful for fraud prevention when opening accounts, applying for loans, wiring money, or accessing sensitive services.
You can create Identify transactions through the API or with an EasyLink.
How it works
An Identify transaction verifies one recipient at a time. To verify multiple people, create a separate transaction for each person.
You can use any combination of the following identity verification methods:
- Credential analysis and selfie comparison
- IAL2-compliant identity verification — if users fail IAL2, they are routed to an on-demand fraud agent to determine if the identity is genuine.
- Knowledge-based authentication (KBA)
Once complete, you'll have access to a Proof identity report with details on success and any potential fraudulent activity. Read "Confirm Your Identity" for the recipient's experience.
Log in to your Proof account to complete the steps below.
1. Select the Transaction
- Go to Transactions from the left navigation menu.
- Select Send New Transaction in the upper right corner.
- Select Identify.
2. Configure Transaction Details
- Transaction details: Enter a name for the transaction.
- (Optional) Add a transaction type or ID.
- (Command Center customers only) Add a cost center.
- Select if the recipient needs secondary ID.
- CC contacts: (Optional) Select + Add CC contact to notify colleagues and share the identity report when the transaction is complete.
3. Add Recipient Information
- Recipient: Provide the recipient's information or select from your saved recipients.
- The recipient may not be able to change their name depending on your account settings.
- Add identity verification: Check the boxes next to the verification method(s) you prefer. The recipient's phone number is required for IAL2.
4. Add Closing Team Contacts (Real Estate only, optional)
- Select Add contact next to Additional contacts to add members of your closing team.
- Select the contact's role and provide their information. Repeat for additional contacts.
5. Send the Transaction
- Select Send transaction to email the Identify request to the recipient.
